Night Halt: Campsite, TsoKam

Highlights:

  • Option to take a car to the road point near Jela Dzong or start hiking above Ta Dzong
  • Hike continues to Jela Dzong, a small monastery on a hilltop overlooking Paro Valley
  • Lunch at the monastery
  • Continue hiking to the campsite through temperate vegetation and rhododendron trees

Distance: 10 km | Duration: 4-5 hours | Camp Altitude: 3,770 m

Night Halt: Campsite, Bjimilangtsho

Highlights:

  • Hike through thick alpine forests and dwarf rhododendron trees
  • Reach the tree line with small shrubs, Himalayan flowers like primulas, and various species of rhododendrons
  • Lunch at Jangchulakha
  • Continue hiking for 2 hours to reach the campsite by Bjimilangtsho, a large mountain lake
  • Opportunity to fish for giant trout with prior permission
  • Yaks and yak herders may be seen around the campsite

Distance: 10 km | Duration: 6-7 hours | Camp Altitude: 3,870 m

Night Halt: Campsite, Labana

Highlights:

  • Trail passes through dwarf rhododendron trees and Janetso Lake
  • Encounter yak herder camps and learn about the Nomad lifestyle
  • Gradual climb with spectacular views of Mount Gangkar Puensum (Bhutan’s highest mountain and the highest unclimbed mountain in the world) and other Himalayan peaks
  • Camp at Labana

Distance: 10 km | Duration: 5 hours

Highlights:

  • Last day of the trek
  • Spectacular sunrise from Phajoding or Labana, with views of Thimphu city in the valley and surrounding mountains
  • Leisurely downhill walk to Thimphu through blue pine and rhododendron forests (about 3 hours)
  • End of trek; overnight at a hotel in Thimphu

What to Wear

• Trekking/outdoor clothing and fairly lightweight but sturdy walking shoes.

• Long sleeves and pants to protect against insects/mosquitoes.

• Light wool clothing to regulate body temperature.

• Good sunglasses and sunhat.

• Plenty of sunscreen.

• A raincoat or umbrella, as it can rain at any time.

Travel Arrangements

Transportation: You will be picked up from Paro International Airport and driven to your hotel in Thimphu. All transportation during the tour, including to and from the festival, will be provided.

Accommodation: You will be staying at a comfortable hotel in Thimphu that offers modern amenities while reflecting Bhutan’s traditional architecture and design.

Meals: All meals will be provided during the tour. You will have the opportunity to taste a variety of Bhutanese dishes, including at the festival where local food stalls will be available.

Health and Safety

Altitude Sickness: Thimphu is located at a high altitude. If you’re not used to such altitudes, you might experience altitude sickness. It’s recommended to acclimatize yourself before the tour and stay hydrated.

Local Customs: Bhutan has a rich cultural heritage and locals appreciate when visitors respect their customs. For instance, when visiting religious sites, it’s important to dress modestly and follow the local etiquette.

Travel Insurance: It’s recommended to have travel insurance that covers any potential medical issues, trip cancellations or delays.
