Night Halt: Campsite, Gur

Highlights:

  • Drive for 45 minutes to Genekha Village, known for producing matsutake and chanterelle mushrooms
  • Trek begins on a mule path, passing through terraced fields and coniferous forests rich in alpine flora and birdlife
  • Descend to the river, followed by a gradual 2-hour uphill climb to a rock platform at 3,350 m, offering picturesque valley views
  • Continue trekking for 2 hours to reach the campsite at Gur, surrounded by wildflowers

Distance: 12 km | Duration: 6 hours | Camp Altitude: 4,300 m

Night Halt: Campsite, Labatama

Highlights:

  • Trek across ridges with rugged mountain vegetation and enjoy the beauty of flowers, wild asparagus (in spring), and large meadows
  • Pass through tiny streams and scattered birches and rhododendrons to reach Pagalabtsa Pass (4,250 m), marked by huge cairns
  • Enjoy spectacular views of Kanchenjunga (Sikkim) and Bhutanese Himalayan peaks from the pass
  • Descend to view the Dagala range meadows and yak herder camps
  • Lunch near a yak herder’s camp
  • Continue descending into the Labatama valley and gradually ascend past yak herder huts to reach Utsho Lake (4,300 m), known for its golden trout

Night Halt: Campsite, Labatama

Highlights:

  • Explore nearby lakes such as Relitsho, Hentsho, Setsho, and Jagetsho, which are full of trout
  • Listen to mystic stories about the lakes from your trekking leader
  • Enjoy lunch by the lakeside, surrounded by spectacular views
  • Optional climb to Jomo Peak (5,050 m)
  • Return to camp by dusk and prepare for the next day’s trek

Night Halt: Campsite, Panka

Highlights:

  • Walk along the western side of Dalatsho Lake to a saddle at 4,520 m, offering majestic views of Himalayan peaks such as Everest (Nepal), Kanchenjunga (Sikkim), Masangang, Tiger Mountain, Tsendagang, and Jichudrakey (Bhutan)
  • Descend from the saddle, passing yak herder huts to the Doccha Chuu River
  • Follow the river, staying higher up on the slope until reaching Panka, where you may see Himalayan monal pheasants, yaks, and horses

Distance: 14 km | Duration: 8 hours

Highlights:

  • Cross several impressive mountain passes
  • Encounter different varieties of blue poppies (June-July) and mountain birds along the trail
  • Lunch at the junction where one trail leads to Talakha and the other to Wangduephodrang
  • Gradual climb for an hour to the last pass, Tale La (4,180 m), offering superb views of the Dagala range and Thimphu
  • Long descent through forests of spruce, birch, juniper, and rhododendrons to Talakha Goempa (3,080 m)
  • Hike down through mixed vegetation, apple orchards, and a feeder road to Chamgang Village
  • Transfer to Thimphu by car from Chamgang

What to Wear

• Trekking/outdoor clothing and fairly lightweight but sturdy walking shoes.

• Long sleeves and pants to protect against insects/mosquitoes.

• Light wool clothing to regulate body temperature.

• Good sunglasses and sunhat.

• Plenty of sunscreen.

• A raincoat or umbrella, as it can rain at any time.

Travel Arrangements

Transportation: You will be picked up from Paro International Airport and driven to your hotel in Thimphu. All transportation during the tour, including to and from the festival, will be provided.

Accommodation: You will be staying at a comfortable hotel in Thimphu that offers modern amenities while reflecting Bhutan’s traditional architecture and design.

Meals: All meals will be provided during the tour. You will have the opportunity to taste a variety of Bhutanese dishes, including at the festival where local food stalls will be available.

Health and Safety

Altitude Sickness: Thimphu is located at a high altitude. If you’re not used to such altitudes, you might experience altitude sickness. It’s recommended to acclimatize yourself before the tour and stay hydrated.

Local Customs: Bhutan has a rich cultural heritage and locals appreciate when visitors respect their customs. For instance, when visiting religious sites, it’s important to dress modestly and follow the local etiquette.

Travel Insurance: It’s recommended to have travel insurance that covers any potential medical issues, trip cancellations or delays.
