Night Halt: Campsite, Soe Thangthangkha

Highlights:

  • Drive from Paro to Shana
  • Meet the trekking crew at Shana and begin the trek
  • Ascend through the PaaChu river valley and blue pine and rhododendron forests
  • Lunch after crossing Thongdo Zam (bridge)
  • Follow the right bank of the river, passing a trail junction marked by a Stupa
  • Continue to Soe Thangthangkha Campsite (25 minutes from junction)
  • View of Mount Jomolhari from the top of the valley

Distance: 19 km | Duration: 6-7 hours | Camp Altitude: 4,040 m

Night Halt: Campsite, Jangothang

Highlights:

  • Pass a small border army check post as the valley widens
  • Leave the forest and enjoy views of snow-capped peaks, yaks, and yak herders
  • Lunch at an open meadow
  • Short walk from lunch to Jangothang campsite, situated in a grassy meadow beneath a ruined fortress

Night Halt: Campsite, Jangothang

Highlights:

  • Acclimatization hike to Tshophu or Twin Lake, offering views of two lakes and Mount Jomolhari, and Jichudrakey
  • Optional hikes in different directions towards Mount Jomolhari, Jichudrakey, and nearby summits and ridges

Distance: 19 km | Duration: 7-8 hours | Camp Altitude: 4,010 m

Night Halt: Campsite, Lingzhi

Highlights:

  • Gradual climb across the PaaChu river tributary
  • Steeper ascent to Nyelay La Pass (4,850 m) with cairns and prayer flags
  • Views of Jomolhari, Jichudrakey, and Tsherim Gang from the pass
  • Steep descent to a small stream for lunch
  • Post-lunch: gradual hike through open meadows, passing Lingzhi Dzong
  • Possible visit to Lingzhi School and Village

Distance: 22 km | Duration: 8-9 hours | Camp Altitude: 4,080 m

Night Halt: Campsite, Shodu

Highlights:

  • Take the right trail past a stupa, ascending alongside the Mo Chu stream for 2 hours
  • Cross the stream and climb up to Yali La Pass (4,920 m)
  • Well-marked trail used by travelers between Lingzhi and Thimphu
  • Lunch before or after crossing the pass
  • Descend to Shodu campsite, following the Wangchu river

What to Wear

• Trekking/outdoor clothing and fairly lightweight but sturdy walking shoes.

• Long sleeves and pants to protect against insects/mosquitoes.

• Light wool clothing to regulate body temperature.

• Good sunglasses and sunhat.

• Plenty of sunscreen.

• A raincoat or umbrella, as it can rain at any time.

Travel Arrangements

Transportation: You will be picked up from Paro International Airport and driven to your hotel in Thimphu. All transportation during the tour, including to and from the festival, will be provided.

Accommodation: You will be staying at a comfortable hotel in Thimphu that offers modern amenities while reflecting Bhutan’s traditional architecture and design.

Meals: All meals will be provided during the tour. You will have the opportunity to taste a variety of Bhutanese dishes, including at the festival where local food stalls will be available.

Health and Safety

Altitude Sickness: Thimphu is located at a high altitude. If you’re not used to such altitudes, you might experience altitude sickness. It’s recommended to acclimatize yourself before the tour and stay hydrated.

Local Customs: Bhutan has a rich cultural heritage and locals appreciate when visitors respect their customs. For instance, when visiting religious sites, it’s important to dress modestly and follow the local etiquette.

Travel Insurance: It’s recommended to have travel insurance that covers any potential medical issues, trip cancellations or delays.
